Saturday Sound Off (2-27)

Happy Saturday! This Saturday Sound Off is going to be slim pickings, I have had a super slow reading week. I have been a baaad baaaad blogger this week (cue Chris Isaak music). I am almost finished with Battle of the Network Zombies, but life outside of books took over this week! I did get a couple nights out and a few drinks here and there tho – some much needed stress relief.

Upcoming for KindleVixen

First, a small group of us on twitter were talking about losing weight and came up with the absolutely genius plan to use twitter as a support group. That was followed by an equally smart idea of creating our own blog about it. So, twitloss will be coming to the blogging world on Monday, watch your tweets for the link!

Even more fabulous upcoming news? The talented and super evil author, Rachel Vincent, will be answering my questions here on KindleVixen on MONDAY! Make sure to mark it on your calendars or I will have to chase you down. Oh, she also posted to her blog this week one of the best book trailers I have seen yet. Well done Mrs. Vincent. Well done. (WARNING, contains PREY spoilers!)

Around the Blog World

Dirty Sexy Books (love the blog name!) posted a neat post, The Ten Biggest Mistakes Authors Make on Their Websites. I giggled a little at number 1 and found myself nodding along with all of it. Great post!

Danielle at Alpha Reader posted an all encompassing look at Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series. I agree with all of it and highly suggest you check it out for motivation to start the series if you haven’t already.

Nat at WickedLilPixie posted “I buck the trend” this week – a post about the growing trend to affiliate with other book bloggers. I agree with her post and wrote my own novel of thoughts in her comments.

Keith Melton posted some really weird and creepy Unicorn photo on his blog this week. I have no idea why I am even linking it other than it left me speechless. I think its his attempt to distract us from noticing his absence on twitter this week. How are we supposed to harass him for super secret book info if he isn’t online 24 hours a day?!?!

All Things Urban Fantasy posted a great recap of new releases upcoming for March. I am especially looking forward to Silver Borne, Mind Games, The Devil’s Playground, Succubus Shadows (seth!), and the Mage in Black.

Katiebabs pointed out that there are only 2 more months until Lover Mine’s release and we are all hoping for some serious Team Qhuay loving. I am so stealing her button, which was made by sparklybearsy.

No books read and reviewed this week – I blame it on twitter.

Saturday Sound Off (5)

Goodness, this Saturday Sound Off is almost becoming a biweekly thing instead of weekly. I will do my best to work on that ;) Things have still been hectic around here – math exams, psychology and women’s studies homework…. and 2 little girls who feel i spend too much time studying. I am looking forward to summer! What, its only February? shoot. Maybe I would get more done if the drug called twitter wasn’t so accessible….. especially since I rewarded myself with an iPhone this month. Now that I can take all of you with me everywhere… its awfully hard to ignore the temptation. Did you know they make an app for iPhone that makes it easier to type and walk at the same time? Not kidding, they do.

In techy blog stuff, I added a footer to the page to show off popular posts and stuff. The calendar/archive widgets probably won’t stay but they are there for now… until I find something more interesting. I will be working on updating the free book page this week.

KV is easy, she gets around…

This week I found myself roped into sharing my love/hate of certain book characters over at WickedLilPixie. I also guest posted my review of Anton Strout’s newest book, Dead Matter, over at Fantasy Dreamer’s Ramblings.

Kim Harrison posted to her blog about the fact that the newest Hollows book, Black Magic Sanction, will be delayed in ebook format. Amazon has the kindle version listed as available April 6, compared to hardcover on February 23rd. But hey, its only $8.65 if you preorder it and don’t mind waiting more than a month for it. Hear that..? Its my very large groaning sigh. oh and that noise? me banging my head on my desk. It seems there will be some sort of enhanced ebook available through iTunes…. but then you are stuck only reading it on an iphone or ipod touch…. no thanks. Books on board has Black Magic Sanction in ebook format, supposedly releasing on Feb. 23rd, if you don’t mind paying a bit more for it here. Of course its in secure Adobe format so you won’t be able to read it on your kindle unless you *shhhh*crack it*shhh*.

On the note of ebooks and the drama around them, Karen Ranney posted a really great blog on ebooks and pricing. Check it out, it is worth it.

The Qwillery is doing its best effort to Save Amanda Feral and giving away 2 copies of Happy Hour of the Damned. Stop by for your chance to win. I love me some Mark Henry…. look for my review of the newest Amanda book this week.

Keith Melton is answering all of his readers questions over at Barnes & Nobles book club this month. Come on over and take advantage…. I know I have!

Business has never been better for hit man Karl Vance. Boston is awash in mafia blood, and Vance has a certain fondness for blood. He’s a master vampire—one of the most powerful of his kind. Having sworn to never again feed on the blood of innocents, Karl preys instead on Boston’s criminal underworld. Which makes him a valuable asset to those who deal in death.

Maria Ricardi intends to use that asset to its full extent in order to gain power within her patriarchal crime family. Vance thinks he’s been hired to keep track of the family’s princess, but she’s got a plan to get her hands dirty and earn the respect she deserves. And she’s not above using their instant attraction to get what she wants.

That driving ambition draws the attention of a rival clan’s newest and most dangerous “consultant.” Alejandro Delgado, Vance’s centuries-old nemesis. Delgado zeroes in on the one chink in Vance’s armor—his fondness for the headstrong Maria.

When she becomes enslaved by Delgado’s unnatural kiss, only one thing is certain. Vance has to decide which he wants more. To settle the score—or rescue her soul.

I have read a lot of books over the last year or so…. and I can honestly say up until now, I have read not a single book that combines mobsters and vampires. Somehow Keith Melton successfully tells the tale of bad ass vampires, violent mafia wars, with a dash of romance on the side.

Maria is the daughter of powerful crime boss. She is desperately trying to prove her worth in the family business to her father and his lieutenants, an impossible task in a male dominated world like the mafia. She has the brains and balls, she just has to convince her family that a woman can do the job. Maria hires Karl Vance, a hired hitman and powerful vampire, to help weaken the enemy crime family. Over the course of the story the war between families becomes much more than a war over money or territory – it becomes personal for Karl and Maria.

At first glimpse of Maria I was prepared to dislike her. She was independent, frank, stubborn, and sometimes sarcastic. While I like my men a bit feisty, these same traits in female characters sometimes lead me to roll my eyes. Too many times a strong/bitter female is defiant even when it doesn’t make sense in an effort to be heroic or self sacrificing. I was fully prepared for Maria to be that type of woman and was pleasantly surprised to find she wasn’t. She may kick you in the balls and call you names, but she also knows when its best to go with the flow and save herself some pain.

Karl Vance is a bad ass mofo. His employers may not know his true nature as a powerful vampire, but they know he has no problem doing what needs to be done. While he gave up on his soul many years ago, he struggles to keep his darker nature in check and do the right thing. I don’t want to say that he is looking for redemption because I don’t believe he thinks its realistic, but at the very least he is looking to minimize his own impact on the world. If the book cover is accurate, he manages to do all of this with his shirt open. What more could we ask for in a vampire hitman?

The plot of this book is hard hitting and quick paced. I was sucked into the story line from the first chapter and snuck in reading time wherever I could find it! I love a good urban fantasy novel that takes no prisoners and this one does that. There is a surprising twist with Maria’s character arc during the first half of the book that completely threw me for a loop! It was daring and unexpected and may have even broken some of those unwritten book rules. I had to check my progress bar to make sure I wasn’t at the end already!

If I had anything to complain about it may have been the romance aspect of the plot. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Vance and Maria at first… and even at the end felt like I needed more time with them and the connection between them. However, I liked that Vance didn’t always know what to say to comfort her and often found himself saying nothing even when it was probably not the right move. It was realistic to his character, even if it sometimes left me feeling a bit cold.

Oh wait, I remembered one more thing I wanted to complain about…. the people in this book are way too good at recognizing fancy suit brands at first glance. I mean this is dark gritty urban fantasy world, not project runway ;) I jest.. I get that its a mob thing!

Teaser Tuesday: Blood Vice by Keith Melton

He moved silently behind her, approaching through the darkness of the tunnel-like arch, through the smell of decaying leaves, old stone and the faint, lingering odor of urine. She kept turning and scanning around her, searching for him or any other person who might be approaching.
