Rating: 4 Stars

In Seattle’s undead circles, Amanda Feral is one of the beautiful zombies. Of course, when you’re socializing with werewolves, devils, and rampaging yetis, there’s not that much competition. Still, Amanda has a stylish rep to maintain, which is getting tricky now that her tanking ad agency is obliterating her finances. The fastest way to make some cash: appear on a new reality show, American Minions, hosted by lecherous wood nymph Johnny Birch. Classy? Maybe not, but a girl’s gotta eat. With zombie gal pal Wendy posing as her bitchy agent, Amanda settles in to ‘Minions Mansion’, crowded with 24-7 video cameras and undead fame whores. When Johnny is found incinerated in a locked room, Amanda decides to channel her inner Miss Marple (minus the ugly cardigans) and find out who’s responsible. Was it Hairy Sue, the white trash stripper yeti? Tanesha, the glamorous trannie werewolf? Angie, the Filipino vampire with a detachable head? Unveiling the culprit in a heart-stopping finale won’t just save the show from cancellation, it might just keep Amanda alive – or as close as a ghoul can get…

In the third installment of the Amanda Feral series Amanda is back, dirtier than ever. Her ad agency is on a downward spiral and her expense budget is in the toilet. In order to keep her condo and pay off her debt to the Reapers Amanda says yes to an opportunity to appear on a new reality show. Yet, things are never simple with Amanda and she finds herself in the middle of her very own murder mystery.

Amanda Feral books always makes me giggle and snort like kids do when they tell fart jokes. Battle of the Network Zombies was no different, it was funny, sarcastic, and disgusting. If you like crass humor with a side of wit, this series is for you.

Amanda and Wendy make a great crime solving duo even if when they seem to be at odds with one another. Gil once again provides comic relief and I found myself looking forward to his bits the most. He is definitely my favorite character of the series. Scott and Amanda’s relationship was a pleasant surprise and I look forward to more of him in the next book (fingers crossed!).

The book started off a bit slow for me, but the plot picked up the pace once wood nymphs started dying and the crazy character parade began. Amanda even shows signs of unexpected personal growth, proving her heart isn’t rotted out after all. Battle of the Network Zombies is another snort out loud story of zombies with killer fashion sense by Mark Henry. Fingers and toes crossed that Amanda Feral’s story doesn’t end here. Oh and the best part? Battle of the Network Zombies is only FREE for your kindle at Amazon right now. Go on, get the rest of the series too, you know you want to.

Goodness, this Saturday Sound Off is almost becoming a biweekly thing instead of weekly. I will do my best to work on that Things have still been hectic around here – math exams, psychology and women’s studies homework…. and 2 little girls who feel i spend too much time studying. I am looking forward to summer! What, its only February? shoot. Maybe I would get more done if the drug called twitter wasn’t so accessible….. especially since I rewarded myself with an iPhone this month. Now that I can take all of you with me everywhere… its awfully hard to ignore the temptation. Did you know they make an app for iPhone that makes it easier to type and walk at the same time? Not kidding, they do.

In techy blog stuff, I added a footer to the page to show off popular posts and stuff. The calendar/archive widgets probably won’t stay but they are there for now… until I find something more interesting. I will be working on updating the free book page this week.

KV is easy, she gets around…

This week I found myself roped into sharing my love/hate of certain book characters over at WickedLilPixie. I also guest posted my review of Anton Strout’s newest book, Dead Matter, over at Fantasy Dreamer’s Ramblings.

All things Kindlicious

If you have been anxiously waiting for Kindle to make it to the Blackberry, wait no more…. it is finally here! Amazon now has a Kindle for Blackberry app here.

Around the Blog World

Kim Harrison posted to her blog about the fact that the newest Hollows book, Black Magic Sanction, will be delayed in ebook format. Amazon has the kindle version listed as available April 6, compared to hardcover on February 23rd. But hey, its only $8.65 if you preorder it and don’t mind waiting more than a month for it. Hear that..? Its my very large groaning sigh. oh and that noise? me banging my head on my desk. It seems there will be some sort of enhanced ebook available through iTunes…. but then you are stuck only reading it on an iphone or ipod touch…. no thanks. Books on board has Black Magic Sanction in ebook format, supposedly releasing on Feb. 23rd, if you don’t mind paying a bit more for it here. Of course its in secure Adobe format so you won’t be able to read it on your kindle unless you *shhhh*crack it*shhh*.

On the note of ebooks and the drama around them, Karen Ranney posted a really great blog on ebooks and pricing. Check it out, it is worth it.

The Qwillery is doing its best effort to Save Amanda Feral and giving away 2 copies of Happy Hour of the Damned. Stop by for your chance to win. I love me some Mark Henry…. look for my review of the newest Amanda book this week.

Keith Melton is answering all of his readers questions over at Barnes & Nobles book club this month. Come on over and take advantage…. I know I have!

So I was procrastinating in my usual way ( chatting on MSN with Nat from WickedLilPixie) when she asked me if I wanted to join her in interviewing our favorite zombie diva, Amanda Feral. For those of you who have not gotten with the program yet and have no idea who Amanda Feral is, I direct you to my reviews of Happy Hour of the Damned and Road Trip of the Living Dead. Review of Battle of the Network Zombies coming soon! Thanks to Mark Henry for being so kind as to let her out of her cage and visit with us! Be warned, she has a foul mouth and no self control. Enjoy!

WLP: WickedLilPixie
KV: KindleVixen

WLP: KindleVixen & I are pleased to have none other than zombie extraordinaire, Amanda Feral here today. Amanda is the host of her own reality show out of Seattle. Thanks for stopping by today Amanda.

Should be interesting. (eyes the hosts) Perhaps. if you don’t bore me. You got in booze up in this shithole?

WLP: I finished your latest memoir, Battle of the Network Zombies, was it hard to write it? I mean you’ve been through hell and back, all in wicked shoes of course.

Hard to write it? Um. No. I have a great memory and whatever I don’t recall is probably too boring to mention, so I just make that shit up. Dialogue and whatever. ::sighs:: But yes, it’s been rough, thankfully I have my friends close by in case I need someone to ridicule. That always lifts my spirits.

WLP: Speaking of shoes, what are your go to “come fuck me shoes”?

Well, this year, to pronounce my willingness to procreate, I’m rocking Louboutin Pigalles. I find that men respond to seeing dead python on a nicely arched foot, please don’t skimp on a pedi, ladies–you don’t want those toes looking like you cling to branches with them.

KV: Since WLP already covered the “come fuck me shoes” – I might as well dive into what we all really want to know. Have you found a lube that works with the zombie lady parts? Maybe the KY warming?

Listen. You don’t really want to know what lubes me up these days, do you? Let’s just say, after a couple of years rotting from the inside, a certain…natural…lubrication occurs. Now, that’s not to say that the reapers don’t provide me with some vaginal freshening—they do. But in the meantime, I get no complaints and far as I’ve seen…no dicks have been harmed—except for the ones that end up as snack food. Next question!

WLP: We know you love your designer clothing, so who is the designer of the moment?

Alexander McQueen definitely. Distorted herringbone is the new pattern. Make a note of it.

KV: I want to ask about Martin. Now that you confessed to eating him…. do you regret it? Did he taste any different being someone you cared about? Did you at least get a good orgasm from him first?

That! Was a mistake. In fact, it all happened so quickly how can I even be sure it happened at all? If you bitches are trying to rile me. It’s not working. ::sucks at her teeth::

WLP: I have to ask, is Wendy still sporting diapers? Can you at least get her into designer ones?

Oh poor Wendy. She can’t seem to work through that pesky eating disorder of hers. And while I’ll admit to a few indiscretions with a shot of espresso, a maxi pad seems to sop that coffee off my twat like a biscuit on honey.

KV: In Road Trip of the Living Dead you make an unexpected trip to an adult sex store where you introduced me to the wonders of the Fleshlight. Did you grab any souvenirs for yourself?

Uh no. Scott’s rough enough without injecting vibrating equipment into the equation. Something might fall off down there. And I’m fond of my nasty nugget, thank you. Though. I know a certain pixie who can’t for the life of her stop talking about Fleshlights. I think she’s been watching demonstration videos. Got one on order for the beau? Sicko.

WLP: Have any good Gil gossip; since he wasn’t around much in Battle of the Network Zombies, I’m a nosey bitch. I need to know more about Gil & the fleshlight! Did he get one?

Wasn’t around much? That’s just ridiculous. That I share my book with him, at all, is to show how generous I am. But yeah. Gil’s got himself this boyfriend, while I find the guy totally creepy in an ew-you’re-a-gross-insect kind of way, he’s totally into him and they make out in public until I want to vomit on them just to stop it. But he’s happy, I guess and that’s what matters, right?

KV: Now that you have been a zombie for a while, and are presumably adjusted…would you choose this life for yourself or is there another supernatural you would rather be?

I don’t really have any regrets. Would I prefer the cheaper self-healing of a vampire? Sure, of course, I would. Who wouldn’t? But there are advantages to my situation, not the least of which is an ability to shop at the beginning of trunk sales, while it’s still daylight.

WLP: What do you say to those readers who think you are “gross & disgusting”?

I say look in the mirror, bitches! I don’t pretend to be perfect, nor am I anyone’s “heroine.”

KV: Something I have been wondering…. obviously, and thank god, zombies can shower – but can you take baths? Or does that give you wrinkly old person skin permanently?

I do prefer to stay out of the water. Particularly since seeing that 20/20 episode about the little fish that the Chinese use to eat dead skin on people’s feet. I suppose it’s the same response people had to the movie Jaws in the 70s.

WLP: How is Feral Inc. going? Is it still going? Should we start a charity?

I’m always happy to accept charity, my bar tab is usually quite extensive. But the business is still up and running. We’re in the entertainment industry now, as you might have guessed.

KV: Considering your bad luck with donut boxes and the nasty consequences of eating a donut as a zombie…do you still splurge in the bakery goodness on occasion? Just asking… some things are worth it.

That’s Wendy’s schtick. Sure. I still think about food. All the time, but donuts are strictly off limits. Now…donut shop customers, that’s another story.

WLP: What kind of human tastes the best?

The one’s that make it into my mouth. Mmm. (wait that sounded dirty) ::shrugs::

KV: In Happy Hour of the Damned it seemed that pre-zombie you were more of a loner, why do you think becoming a zombie changed that and drove you to create your own supernatural A-Team?

That’s tricky. Because it’s true, I was very much focused on my work and my social life was very…limited. But there was something…whether it was that I was so lost and clueless initially or that I’d lost my precious control and actually needed others to help me through for the first time, it’s hard to say. But it’s funny how that happened, huh?

WLP: What do you think of Mark Henry’s Save Amanda campaign?

He can do whatever he likes. I’ll continue to live my life whatever happens to the books. If it all goes tits up, I might put him out of his misery. That’s probably for the best, even with all the fat and gristle.

KV: How is it writing with Mark Henry? If he suddenly keeled over and died…. is there another author you would want to write your memoirs?

No. Not a chance.

KV: To say that you have a potty mouth is an understatement….. what is your favorite curse word?

Cunt. No, just kidding. I love saying that one, because it gets people going and I love to do that more than anything but, really, I’ve got to go with the old standby: FUCK.

WLP: Thanks for stopping by Amanda and more than likely causing irreparable damage to our readers, I wouldn’t have had it any other way!

Be sure to pick up the re-release of Happy Hour of the Damned, in stores now! Thanks to Nat for always being there to help me avoid my homework and inviting me to join her on this interview. She thinks we should tag team more often, I agree…. tho next time can we tag team a sexy man at least?

Celebrity party girl Amanda Feral is back from the dead, and hungrier than ever for a good time. With her zombie gal pal Wendy and vampy gay sidekick Gil, this stone cold fox is dressed to kill, on the prowl, and ready to take a big juicy bite out of Seattle’s supernatural nightlife. But what’s a zombie chick to do when her ‘Mommie Dearest’ gets sick? If you’re Amanda Feral, you can either ignore the wicked old witch – or bury the past by visiting Ethel before she kicks it. Amanda’s not thrilled about the idea of crossing three states just to be criticized. But Wendy, who’s always looking for fresh meat, is up for the adventure. And Gil, who just launched his ‘luxury’ resurrection business, needs to disappear because a pissed-off client is out for his blood. First, they pack their stiletto pumps and plasma into a skeevy rattrap on wheels that used to be a Winnebago. Then, with a little help from a Korean-ghost hood ornament, a masochist named Fishhook, and a slew of ‘moderately accurate’ psychics, they hit the highway – their way. Of course, they’ll have to navigate past some neo-Nazi skinheads, a horny dust devil, a hunky werewolf cop (who could pass for an underwear model) and an unsightly horde of supermarket shoppers. But for this glamorous gang of ghouls this trip is about to take a dangerous detour that could give road kill a brand new meaning.

I opened up Road Trip of the Living Dead and prepared myself to be entirely grossed out by Mark Henry’s sick and twisted sense of humor again. He did not disappoint and I quickly found myself gasping and giggling at Amanda Feral and her “pottymouth.” I mean how can one not love her?

I’m a total shoe slut. Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin: this is an open invitation. Feel free to run a train on me. The cost? Stilettos, duh.

In Road Trip of the Living Dead Amanda, Wendy, and Gil find themselves up to their supernatural asses in trouble and are forced out on the run (all because of some really gross ghost urine!). The gang uses the need to leave town as an opportunity to visit Amanda’s deathly ill mother. However, nothing is ever simple for these three and their road trip quickly turns into an adventure filled with action, danger, gold grills, and fleshlights (google if you must, but I warn you… do it when you are completely alone! its errrr interesting).

While I found book 1, Happy Hour of the Damned, to be heavy on the character plotting, book 2 was a nice blend of character and interesting storyline. If anything I think Gil and Wendy took a smaller role about halfway through and I missed them a tiny bit! The mystery and suspense was better and more to the forefront than the previous book. I was engrossed in the oddly developing story and simply did not want to put this one down! Mark Henry brings in some new characters that are sure to make you laugh, including a sexy new werewolf named Scott. We even got a smexy scene that will make you snicker!

I have only one itsy bitsy complaint (or I would have given this 5 stars) ~ I wanted more with Amanda’s mother. We get such a tiny glimpse of her at the end and I was slightly confused as to what happened to/with her. There was quite a bit of setup as to Amanda and her mother and that plot line seemed to take a bit of a backseat in the end. However Amanda did make a few comments that lead me to believe this was intentional and more is coming.

With Road Trip of the Living Dead Mark Henry had me once again laughing hysterically, out loud, causing the hubby to look at me like I had lost a few marbles. If you haven’t yet jumped on the Save Amanda Feral bandwagon, don’t worry, there is still time! Book 1, Happy Hour of the Damned, is being re-released as Mass Market Paperback on January 26th and you can pre-order it from amazon.com here. You can read my review of book 1 here. Book 3, Battle of the Network Zombies is being released on February 23rd.

Seattle. One minute you’re drinking a vanilla breve, the next, some creepy old dude is breathing on you, turning you into a zombie. And that’s just for starters. Now, the recently deceased Amanda Feral is trying to make her way through Seattle’s undead scene with style (mortuary-grade makeup, six-inch stilettos, Balenciaga handbag on sale) while satisfying her craving for human flesh (Don’t judge. And no, not like chicken.) and decent vodkatinis.
Making her way through a dangerous world of cloud-doped bloodsuckers, reapers, horny and horned devils, werewolves, celebrities, and PR-obsessed shapeshifters–not to mention an extremely hot bartender named Ricardo–isn’t easy. And the minute one of Amanda’s undead friends disappears after texting the word, “help” (The undead–so dramatic!) she knows the afterlife is about to get really ugly.

Something sinister is at hand. Someone or something is hellbent on turning Seattle’s undead underworld into a place of true terror. And this time, Amanda may meet a fate a lot worse than death…

Confession Time: Zombies. Totally not my thing and not sexy. I think this could be the very first zombie book I have read, but it won’t be the last! Contrary to popular belief zombies do not always walk around chanting brains. If they are lucky enough to be “made” zombies, like Amanda Feral, they can continue to function as they did before death, mostly. The exception being the devastating (and totally gross) side effects of eating real food, pale skin even a spray tan won’t fix, and the desire for human flesh. Other than those minor things, they can carry on with their lives as usual. Amanda Feral is trying to do just that, refusing to give up her designer clothes, power career, or warm blooded boyfriend just because she is dead. Unfortunately the afterlife isn’t so easy for her when one of her friends seemingly goes missing and she finds herself in over her head in someone’s attempt to stage a world takeover, one Starbucks at a time.

Amanda Feral and friends are quite possibly the most foul mouthed, snarky, and sarcastic group of characters I have come across yet. They are dirty ~ and I don’t mean “spank me” dirty, I mean “depends” dirty. Their brand of humor is not for the easily offended or light of heart. Living with an experienced master of inappropriate jokes and sarcasm, aka my husband, I figured I was up for the challenge. A few times I found myself cringing because Mark Henry holds nothing back, gore and bowels are not off limits. However, most of the time I found myself silently snickering and snorting along at bad jokes and hilarious storytelling. Mark Henry seems to have the unique ability of making the gory act of zombies eating humans perfectly normal, if not funny.

I have only one itty bitty complaint…footnotes. Happy Hour of the Damned is filled with footnotes, giving you little tidbits of info sure to make you snort out loud. Because I didn’t want to miss any of the funny, I wasn’t about to ignore their existence, but I did find them a tad distracting when reading it on the Kindle. Obviously, this is not the fault of the author, but this may be one of those series that are better off read in paperback where you can flip back and forth easily (*gasp* yes, I did indeed say that… mark your calendars!). Being a diehard Kindle lover who avoids dead tree books if at all possible, I did come up with a method that was workable and figured I would share because I am a generous girl like that.

Step 1. Before you get reading, use the “go to location” function from the kindle menu of the book to go to the back of the book and find the start of the footnotes section. Hit Alt+B to bookmark it.

Step 2. Start reading. When you get to a foot note use the “go to bookmark” function to navigate to your bookmark. (On the K1 all you do is click on the progress bar and then hit the “next” button – I don’t know if this is true for the K2).

Step 3. Read the usually hilarious footnote, then hit the “back” button.

Step 4. Continue reading to next footnote and then repeat procedure. Since there are a lot of footnotes in this book and for some reason each one is on a seperate “page”, I did reset the bookmark location every 3-4 footnotes so I would have less to page through.

Because of Mark Henry’s foul mouthed crew of comediens I give Happy Hour of the Damned 4 stars. It was fun to read an urban fantasy with main characters who were not battling with moral dilemmas and ethical questions. I can’t wait to see what else Amanda Feral can get herself into. Next up, Road Trip of the Living Dead.
