A video in which I ramble and provide absolutely no worthwhile information about the View Sonic Gtablet.

Right, so there was some interest in a brief (hah!) video about my new tablet. And by interest I think like two people wanted to see it, and I aim to please.

Disclaimers: I provide very little useful information and really suck at camera angles. Also, my allergies are acting up now that I’ve stopped taking medication daily and it probably shows. Finally, I have no idea why I decided to do this at 11 pm without makeup or actual hardware specs in front of me.

The tablet is a View Sonic GTablet, recently purchased from Woot.com for just under $250, but can be had at Amazon for $269 last I looked. Hardware specs are as follows:

    1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2
    512MB RAM
    16GB internal memory
    Android 2.2 (Froyo)
10.1″ screen with 1080p playback and 1024×600 resolution
    3650 mAh li ion battery
    1.3MP front facing camera
    802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi

All in all a decent tablet if you can find it for around $200. A great tablet for $250 if you can geek it up. Otherwise, hold off and wait to see what Amazon has to offer.

I don’t know if anyone is interested in seeing an “after geekification” vlog, but I might consider doing one.

Friday Foto: It is summer vacation! What are your kids doing?

I don’t know about your kids, but mine are bored. Already. Its only the end of June! We are in for a long summer. It doesn’t help that it is 107 degrees and far too hot to go to the park, even at 9am and with water features to play in. I am trying to convince them to curl up with a book and enjoy the air conditioning but it seems I am losing that battle. Play dough and art supplies are next up on my war plan. But for today….

My girls are dressing up in odd costumes and teaching themselves Spanish. I have no idea what inspired it or even where they found the computer disc they are using, but…. they are quiet so I’m just going to slink off to the living room and grab my kindle.

P.S. I think I’m going to run a contest soon. And I’m writing posts and designing blogs again! Let the angels sing.

P.P.S. I still need a new blog name.

Friday Foto: A mini me in the making? Maybe.

This past Tuesday my oldest turned 10. Scary. Officially double digits and no longer capable of going a day or more without showering. Now, if only I can convince her of that fact. Anyway, what do all 10 year olds want for their birthday?

Mmhmm. Dolls. But not just any dolls, creepy paranormal dolls. Say hello to Clawdeen, daughter of werewolf, and Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein. Unfortunately, Draculaura, daughter of Dracula, was out of stock. Yes, she asked for all of these and yes I happily bought them for her. Does a love for urban fantasy run in the genes? Maybe.

I also passed down my Kindle 1 to her and am crossing my fingers it doesn’t end up cracked, colored on, or otherwise dissected. So far she adores it and I keep catching her reading it in the wee hours of the morning. Again, no idea where she gets this from.

FYI – There is actual book content coming, soon. I promise! I have 1-2 weeks left of class for this semester and then I’m FREE! Or at least as free as I can be. I’ll try to finish up playing Portal 2 during that time so I’m not tempted to play instead of reading.

P.S. I’m considering having a contest to help me come up with a new blog name. My creativity is lacking. So far I’ve got nothing but sockvixen, geekyvixen, vixenthegeek, ageekyvixen, or thevixensview. I know right? Gah. Start brainstorming for me will you?

Friday Foto – This is my life. Or about to be.

My Desk

School starts back up again on Monday and this semester I actually have to go to campus for two classes… oy. I have to leave my house and be social. *whimper* Anyway, books have been bought (you are looking at $358 worth of education material in this photo), my macbook has been “cleaned”… I’m ready. On the schedule this spring:
Calculus
Finite Math
Statistics
Intro to Graphic Design

The Graphic Design class is for fun. *laugh*

What does this first half of the year look like for you? I swear summer will be here before we know it.

A Reading Funk – what’s a blogger to do?!?

It’s a bird…. no, it’s a plane… no! It’s a post from ME! Sound the alarms… bring out the donuts! *grin*

I know – it’s like I disappeared off the blogging planet. The truth is, I’ve been in a reading funk. But the first step to fixing it? I hear it is admitting it! or something. With the help of a little poking from a friend on twitter, I decided today would be the day I step back into my blogging shoes… or fuzzy slippers as they may be and just write what I have been thinking. Basically.. how did I get into this funk!??! I think I have read may 4 books over the last 2 months…. I was reading 2-3 books a week at one point.

The first thing to consider when questioning why a blogger may be in a funk…. what is going on in my life? Is something I am doing causing me to be in a funk? But really.. the answer is no. Life is pretty much the same as it always has been… the exception that I actually have had more time to read over the summer and plenty of opportunity since I find myself at the gym quite a bit. The kids may drive me batty with their bickering, but they are easy enough to send to their room and let myself cuddle up with my Kindle.

Is it just me? Maybe I need to take a break and stop reading and recollect myself? Maybe I burnt myself out reading 300+ books since I got my Kindle? I took a good hard look at this one, because its possible! Yet, I don’t think its the number one factor. Yes, I read a lot and needed a break.. I’ve taken a bit of one by reading less… by not accepting every review offered to me so I don’t feel obligated. Yet some books I’ve picked up lately, I just felt “meh” about anyway. At the same time, at least one book I picked up over the last 2 months I absolutely LOVED.

What all this rambling comes down to is this…. I think my tastes as a reader have evolved. I have read some really fantastic books over the last year. Moira Rogers, Jim Butcher, Ilona Andrews, Shiloh Walker… all authors that have absolutely blown me away in one way or another with their work. The more I read from them, and other authors of their caliber, the higher I set my standards for a book. At first, I thought maybe this is a bad thing? Maybe they are artificially inflating my expectations for their respective genres?

But really, how could expecting great reads be too much? Why should I settle for things that are “meh” or good when I know there is better waiting for me? The more I think about it, the more I feel this is where I am at. Will I eventually want to spend my time on the just “good enough” ..? I am sure I will. But for now, I want to be completely captivated and blow away when I pick up a book. I want that feeling that you get when you can not bear to set a book down, splashing cold water on your face at 3 am because you do not want to sleep til you get to the next chapter. Maybe this is too much to ask… but then I have to ask you… why would it be?
