I don’t think it is any big secret that I love really well written and smart Young Adult books, and one of my favorites is the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. It’s a not entirely unbelievable and heartbreaking post-apocalyptic story of a young girl and the rebellion she reluctantly becomes the face of. When I read the movie rights to the trilogy had been picked up by Lionsgate I was cautiously excited. Let’s face it, movie adaptions almost never go right. The Swedish adaptations of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo being one of the only exceptions. I am even more cautious with the announcement of Jennifer Lawrence being cast as Katniss. Her role in Winter’s Bone certainly testifies to her acting ability, but she is a far cry from what I imagined Katniss to be. Physical appearances can certainly be altered so she gets the benefit of the doubt and Suzanne Collins’ stamp of approval.

As discussion bounces around the internet and among my fellow mom friends who love this series, I say why not throw out our fantasy casts*? Don’t tell me you don’t have them. Or is it just me? Hmm. Well whatever, you are getting mine because this blog desperately needed a new post and this is what I felt like doing right now.

According to a statement from Amazon.com, the Kindle is now the most gifted item on amazon…. EVER. In addition to that shocking fact, on Christmas day it seems that Ebooks outsold physical books for the first time in history.

A few more interesting facts from Amazon:

Amazon customers purchased enough fruit cake to equal the weight of a 1967 Volkswagen Bug.

Amazon customers bought enough gingerbread house kits that if stacked on top of each other would be as tall as the Sears Tower.

If all the computers customers purchased this holiday were stacked one on top of the other, they would be more than twice as high as Mt. Everest.

During the 2009 holiday season, Amazon customers bought enough 8 GB iPod touches to play 442 years of continuous music.

In 2009, Amazon customers purchased enough heart rate monitor watches to put one on the wrist of everyone who finished the New York City marathons in 2008 and 2009.

Amazon customers purchased enough Frustration-Free Package items to eliminate over 32,000 pounds of frustrating plastic materials, such as plastic clamshells.

So glad to see the frustration-free package numbers…. less plastic! woo!

Anyway, if you want to see more interesting facts and more from amazon, check out the release here.

I am practically vibrating with happiness for all the new Kindle owners out there…. as I like to say on twitter: Welcome to the dark side

I was not so lucky enough to get any electronic fun things for christmas, no iphone *pout*. My Christmas gifts…. a pink snuggie, a knitted purple hat, and potpourri. My kid have interesting taste, but I love them for it. What did you get under your tree?

There have been many questions surrounding the Barnes & Noble Nook and book loaning. Someone over at the Barnes & Noble help board asked the question:

The FAQ says, “You can lend many of your eBooks one time for a maximum of 14 days.” Does this mean you can only loan the book out once, PERIOD, and once you have loaned out a book you can NEVER loan it out again, even after the 14 day loan period expires?

The reply from Kristin S. (administrator) is this:

Yes, that’s correct. You can loan each eBook (providing the publisher allows this) one time only, for a period of 14 days, to any B&N eReader-supported device, including nook, Mac, PC, iPhone, iPod Touch, and BlackBerry. During this time you cannot read the eBook yourself. Hope that helps, and thanks for your question.

As I suspected, the lending feature is indeed dependent on publishers allowing their books to be shared, much like the kindle Text to Speech feature is dependent on publishers. Given the current attitude of many publishers towards e-books, I wonder just how many will be allowing their books to be shared? On top of that you can only share it once of the lifetime of owning that book? And only for 14 days? Yes many of us bookaholics read a book in a day or two, but most mortals need more than 14 days to finish a book. It will be interesting to see how this feature plays out once the device is released.

Amazon announced today a price drop as well as a new model that features international wireless.

I still prefer the Kindle 1 because of the replaceable battery and the SD card slot, and they can still be bought for $199 or less on amazon. However, $259 is a great deal on a brand new model. This should help Amazon’s stay at the top of the ereader market even with the release of the new Sony model and the addition of Barnes and Noble to the ebook market.
