KC - if you were going to start with one Ilona Andrews book I would start with On the Edge, just because its a great intro to her writing and so far the only one of that series. The Kate Daniels series is awesome, but much more emphasis on the urban fantasy.  Almost no romance in the first Kate book  and the tension and wit between the characters later on is some of Andrews best stuff. You get that right off the bat in On the Edge.</description>
