Lay it on me – completed book series you love?
I was talking with a friend through email a while ago about Urban Fantasy books and we were discussing how they are almost always a series and never a finished one! Sometimes an Urban Fantasy series goes on well past its’ prime (I’m looking at you Laurell K Hamilton) but mostly we celebrate not having to let go of our favorite characters and move on to something new. We UF lovers are all so dysfunctional that we love the torture of a good cliffhanger or a long drawn out plot line.
Yet, I can’t be alone in that sometimes I wish I had a series I could read start to finish and be done with it, completed. Right now to get that closure I have to jump genres to paranormal romance or contemporary romance, but why can’t we have that in Urban Fantasy? Surely there are some well written series that aren’t never ending? Looking through my Goodreads lists I did find three Urban Fantasy series that are finishing up this year.
Rachel Caine’s Weather Wardens
Book 9 is releasing on August 3rd and will be the last one. While I will miss Jo and David, it feels like the right time to say goodbye. Jo has been put through hell and back over and over again, she deserves a little quiet time ![]()

Keri Arthur’s Riley Jenson
Book 9, Moon Sworn, released May 25th and marked the end of Riley Jenson’s story. These are technically Urban Fantasy but they lean pretty heavily toward Paranormal Romance in my opinion, lots of explicit sex in many of them.

Jenna Black’s Morgan Kingsley
The last book, The Devil’s Playground, released March 23rd but I believe it was ended by the publisher, not because the author was finished with the series. Because of that I don’t know how much closure there is… I haven’t gotten around to reading the last book yet.

The Weather Warden series is one of my fav. UF series and I will be sad to finish it. However, I completely agree with you that it is time for Jo to have some peace in her life.
P.S. That LKH comment almost made me spit out of my soda. Personally, I stopped reading AB at book 7…
There are a few series I loved that are finished.
Holly Lisle – The World Gates series. Three books. LOVED them! Love anything Holly Lisle writes actually. She rocks socks!
C.E. Murphy – The Negotiator series. Three books. Also loved them with an unholy love! Again, just about anything Murphy writes is gold in my opinion. She also writes The Walker Papers – book 4 just came out and hope it NEVER ends. LOL
Robin D. Owens – The Summoning Series. 5 books. I’m not a stalker with Owens books like I am with Lisle and Murphy but they were very good.
So, that’s some of my crack. I look forward to adding more to my ever growing wish/TBR lists thanks to this post.
)
Thanks Tina! I haven’t read any of those yet
I’ll be keeping an eye on this post.
I don’t have a suggestion for a finished series but I just bought four of the five Jenna Black Books (I received the fifth book for an unknown reason but I hadn’t read any of them so I bought the first four, anyway…) and I just finished the first one. Does the series end with number five or is there going to be never ending cliff hanger? I hate that! I’m worried now.
The series does end with number 5 but I honestly am not sure how it ends… its on my list to read but I haven’t gotten to it yet
I also will be keeping my eye on this post – I so understand the need to just read a series right through to the end…
This was hard but I came up with a few.
Charlie Huston’s Joe Pitt series finished with 5 books. Awesome series.
Simon R. Green’s Nightside series finished this year with 12 books I think.
Keri Arthur has another couple of series. Spook Squad which runs to 3 books and the Nikki & Michael books which are 4 books long.
Lillith Saintcrows’ Dante Valentine books ran to 5 books and then finished.
And I know Carolyn Crane’s Disillusionist books are going to be a trilogy only.
Colleen Gleason’s Gardella series is only 5 books but it’s more a historical urban fantasy.
Thanks Sayuri! I havent read any of those… I have read Keri Arthurs Myth and Magic series but not any of the ones you mentioned!
I was going to add the Gardellas!!
Rachel Vincent is finishing up her shifter series with Alpha this year. \
Richelle Mead is finishing up her Vampire Academy series with Last Sacrifice this year also.
Oh – and Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series finishes up in December too.
Yeah, I forgot about Alpha… I can’t wait for resolution! argh!
I haven’t read the VA series yet tho I love both her other series.
“well past its’ prime (I’m looking at you Laurell K Hamilton)” – SO TRUE! lol. She should have stopped 10 books ago, IMO.
Great point about Caine’s ‘Weather Warden’. It feels like it’s time. I can’t really imagine Jo getting any more bruised and battered. I love the series, but I look forward to the final showdown.
Richelle Mead is concluding her first two series, rather soon. ‘Vampire Academy’ is finishing this year with ‘Last Sacrifice’ in December, bringing the series to a close with 6 books. BUT she is writing a spin-off VA series, to be released in 2011.
She’s also finishing her ‘Georgina Kincaid’ series on the sixth book, as yet untitled, to be released 2011.
Then there’s Kelley Armstrong’s YA series ‘Darkest Powers’ trilogy that wrapped up this year with ‘The Reckoning’. Though, like Mead, Armstrong has a spin-off series coming out next year with a whole new crop of characters, but based in the same world.
2010 seems to be the end-year for a few long-distance serials. I am 98% sure Carrie Vaughn’s ‘Kitty Norville’ series is also finishing up this year. How sad.
Danielle – I had hope after Skin Trade/Blood Noir… they werent as bad… but so far Bullet is a giant pile of poop.
I didn’t realize the 6th Georgia book would be the last. I also hadn’t heard that about the Kitty series.
I forgot about Armstrong’s YA series! I read the first 2, but not the last yet.
Well I’m going to add to this one with L A Banks ‘Vampire Huntress’ Series which was 12 books.
ooh thank you Kay! Have not read those yet either
I loved Charlaine Harris’ “Harper Connelly” series about a woman who can detect dead people who travels with her step brother around the country halping to solve missing person cases. I loved every page of ever book. Great series in my opinion. Sookie Stackhouse fans should enjoy the writing, though this series has not supernatural beings.
MsM
Thanks Elizabeth! I have that series on my list to get to eventually!
I just remembered this site –
http://allromancewriters.com/series.cfm
It has a cool link for a whole bunch of authors and their series. It’s not hard ot navigate – and I have been using it for awhile now..
May I recomment JJ Massa – Montgomery Wolf series – guilty pleasure read for me..
Happy trails…

Thank you Tiff!!
you’re welcome!
and the art cases in your etsy store are far too cute! I think I need a couple lol
The ones I thought of have all been mentioned. I was too late ;p
I like to pretend Anita ends with Incubus Dreams…
it started going downhill for me after OB but I had hope with skin trade…. blah… that series pisses me off.
What a great post-I can’t wait to see what turns up! Julie Kenner has a group of three Blood Lily books: Tainted, Torn and Turned. I read the first one and it’s excellent-haven’t had time to read the other two yet.
Oh thank you Colette! I have that on my wish list, I didn’t know it finished at 3!
Honestly, I don’t have many series that aren’t ongoing. The only ones that have finished that I can think of are the Nora Roberts trilogies that I love… The Circle Trilogy (mmm, Cian… LOVE) and The Sign of Seven are the two that pop off the top of my head.
Like I said. My series are all ongoing. Sookie (though I’m starting to get bored with those – Dead & Gone was so “meh” for me, that I haven’t read Dead in the Family yet), BDB, In Death… and those are the only ones I can think of right now.
Just thought I would comment and say superb theme, did you design it yourself? Really looks superb!
This is like my third time stopping over your homepage. Regularly I do not make comments on homepage, but I have to mention that this article really pushed me to do so. Really great post .
I feel so bad that Russell Brands has just filed for divorce with Katy Perry. They looked like such a good couple and ones that I had very high hopes for. Well I wish them the best nevertheless because they are very good people. I hope they stay friends after the split. Here is more info about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5nvUkMvBZI
Great goods from you, man. I’ve understand your stuff previous to and you’re just extremely magnificent. I really like what you have acquired here, certainly like what you’re saying and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still care for to keep it sensible. I cant wait to read much more from you. This is actually a terrific web site.
