Tuesday Tips & Tricks ~ Custom Kindle Font

Ever wished your kindle books had a differenet font? Well lucky for you, they can. You can change the default font on your kindle with a simple hack. Only stipulations are that this ONLY works for the K2, specifically those with 2.3 version software. If you have a K2 and have turned on your wireless anytime in the last few months, chances are that includes you. You should also make note, that with any future Kindle software updates you may need to remove the font hack, update and then reinstall the font hack. I will include uninstall info below as well.

Anyway, here we go. Remember, it may seem complicated but if you do it step by step its easy peasy!

If you own a Kindle 2…(2.3 Version Software only)

  • Make sure you computer is showing you hidden files, you will need to be able to see some hidden system files to install this hack. If you are using Windows make hidden files visible by doing this:

~Go to Start Menu, then Control Panel, then Folder Options
    ~Click “View” tab (at top)
~Scroll down the list: where is says “Hidden Files and Folders” & make sure that “Show hidden files and folders” is selected”
~Scroll down a bit more and UNcheck the one that says “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)”
    ~Click OK

  • Download the font of your choice from here- this page contains the hack install files for K2, K2 international, and KDX as well as some screen shot previews.
  • The file is “zipped” you will need to unzip it somewhere. Open the folder and select, then right click to “copy” the file you need.
  • Attach the Kindle to a computer using the USB cord, making sure the power is on.
  • Browse to your Kindle using Windows Exploer(PC) or Finder(Mac).
  • Browse into your Kindle using Explorer(PC) or Finder(Mac) and within the main(root) folder right click and paste your Kindle version .bin file here. Do not create any folders or put it in any of the folders.
  • After copying is complete, remove the Kindle from the USB connection.
  • On your Kindle go to home>menu>settings>menu>Update your Kindle and wait for update to complete. (It takes a minute)
  • Congrats! After this is done, your new font should show up and you are done! If you find that you don’t like the font you chose, just pick a new one and repeat the process! Your Kindle will use the most recently added font as the default.

To uninstall your font hacks, download this file and run through the above steps with the .bin file provided just as you did to install.
